Letter from the ADD Adult Support Group Leader:

March 25, 2003

ADD Adults and Adult Support Group Members,

So far we’ve been having a successful year at CHADD, it has been a pleasure seeing the new faces at our meetings and it’s always a pleasure to see our long-standing members.

I hope that the arrival of spring finds you healthy and happy. With the arrival of spring also come the new projects that we often think of to fill our longer daylight hours. As ADD people we can certainly be creative! We also must remember in our boundless creativity to think of scope. It is important not to create excess pressure in our lives by planning the design and completion in our of a new Taj Mah Hall in our back yards (1/100 scale of course.)

It is essential, I think, for the ADD person to have new and exciting things to look forward to. So a good way of checking in and making sure that your scope fits the time you have in your life - is to ask someone else (who you know has a good sense of time) how long they think your project will take. It’s also good to stop and think of similar projects and how long they took in order to get an idea of how big our plans are. And don’t forget, if you have a few ideas in the hopper, to list them out together. The other way we can get ourselves into trouble is planning perfectly doable projects, but having so many we don’t realize how booked we are. And I also know some of us are working on saying no when we are asked to do things that add too much pressure and drain in our lives.

I hope that you all have an enjoyable spring, and that your life is filled with interesting things to keep your brain properly entertained. I like the quote I saw on the Chicago Chadd Chapter’s website:

"It has to be fun.
If it is not fun, it has to be moving.
If it is not fun or moving, maybe we can poke it and make it mad."

So I guess the most important thing is to take the time to have a good laugh at ourselves, and enjoy the creativity we bring to our own lives and to the lives our loved ones.

In the future I will try to update this adult page with interesting and useful information about ADD.  I hope that you will find your journey from diagnoses as positive and fruitful as I have found mine.  I also hope to see you at one of our future Adult Support Group Meetings!

Sincerely,

Lauren Torres
