Loving Your Ego – Exercise
The ego gets a lot of blame in the world for causing problems. It is certainly true that the misunderstandings of our ego, can be a source of difficulties. When we know only the ego, without knowing the interconnection too, we can act in ways that are selfish, or self destructive.

However, as I explained in The Gifts of the Ego, the ego offers us an opportunity to experiences ourselves as an unique individual, and to enjoy that uniqueness in others.
The ego is “doing its best” to be a partner with us as we live our life. Its misunderstandings, and fears are a natural result of the consciousness of being separate. As we become self aware, and try to see how we can get mislead when we only use the ego to guide our actions, we also need to remember to share our love with that same ego.
There are many forms of love, and ways of loving. Anything we withdraw our love from, is left in a cold shadow. Without love, it is difficult for the ego to be “the best that it can be.”

How do we find the balance between being aware of our ego, and its potential pitfalls, and loving it properly? I have a suggested visualization, that may help you to diagnose how your ego is doing. Is it healthy? Is it getting love?
Exercise
Imagine for a moment, that your ego is like a field of wild flowers. Your ego has a desire to enable your expression… the many flowers in the field. It has a desire to experience beauty, in the form of the many colorful flowers. It has a desire to receive love, such as the sunlight that shines on the field.

Close your eyes, and see this field. (Use meditation music / drumming to help if needed.) How is this field of wildflowers doing? Does it appear healthy, and vibrant? Is there a diversity of flowers there? Do the elements seem in balance… for instance is the field too dry or too wet?
Once you see the state of this wild field, note what you see and feel. Using your intuition, do you think the field is receiving enough love? If you were to guess at something that the field might be in need of… what would that be?
There is no one right or correct way this visualization will appear. However, the image will try to communicate the truth of its state to you. So you if you find something is off, you need to use your instincts and inner knowing to determine what that might mean.
What are you sharing with ego? What are you keeping from it? What are you telling yourself about your own self that might be untrue?
